UNMC will participate in a book drive to honor the late Nate LaFave, son of Beth LaFave, an administrator in the division of infectious diseases in the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine.
Nate, a high-school student, was killed in an automobile accident in 2013. The drive celebrates his love of books — his friends and family called him “the world’s most extroverted bookworm.”
Donations of new and gently-used books in celebration of Nate’s life will be delivered to the Junior League of Omaha’s “A Book of My Own” program. Books for children from newborn to age 14 will be distributed to at-risk youth through several agencies in town, including the Boys and Girls Club and Girls Inc. Adult books will be directed to appropriate local literacy programs.
Members of the UNMC community who knew Nate personally are invited to write personal notes about him on the inside cover of donated books. The notes will be posted to Nate’s Facebook page.
On the UNMC Omaha campus, there will be a bin where books can be dropped off beginning today on the second floor of the Sorrell Center near the C-Store. If individual departments want to collect books, arrangement for pickup can be made by emailing Beth LaFave. In addition, drop-off locations around the city include:
- The Bookworm, 8702 Pacific St.
- Concord Mediation Center, 4225 N. 90 St.
- Back and Neck Care Center, 2055 N. 156 St.
- Ridgeview Animal Hospital, 18142 Wright St.
- Walnut Creek Veterinary Clinic, 96th Street and Highway 370.
Donors can leave a message at the “Books for Nate” Facebook page to arrange a drop off not listed, or email the Junior League directly. The drive will run through April 30.
