Spotlight on new faculty – John Dickinson, M.D., Ph.D.

John Dickinson, M.D., Ph.D.

John Dickinson, M.D., Ph.D., is a new faculty member in the College of Medicine. Here’s a brief rundown of his background and the expertise he brings to UNMC.

  • Name: John Dickinson, M.D., Ph.D.
  • Hometown: Yankton, S.D.
  • New title and department at UNMC: Assistant professor, department of internal medicine, division of pulmonary, critical care, sleep & allergy

Research/Professional interests:
I am interested in the care of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and will join the team at the Adult CF Center at UNMC. My lab focuses on the regulation of mucus secretion in the lung. Excessive secretion of mucus in the airways plays a significant role in diseases such as asthma, cystic fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Currently, I am studying the role that autophagy plays in the signal pathways leading to mucus secretion.

How I fell in love with pulmonary and critical care medicine:
I enjoy the team approach to medicine, which is employed in the ICU as part of critical care medicine and in the CF clinic. A well-organized team improves outcomes for patients and also is a lot of fun.

Degrees:

  • M.D., Ph.D. from UNMC, 2007

Previous Positions:

  • Post-doctoral research fellow, Washington University, St. Louis
  • Clinical fellow in pulmonary & critical care medicine, Washington University, St. Louis

Memberships:

  • American Thoracic Society
  • American College of Chest Physicians

Three things people may not know about me:

  • I enjoy trail running.
  • I also enjoy St. Louis Cardinal baseball (the other “Go Big Red!”).
  • I know it’s strange, but I love a large winter snowstorm. I probably check this blog site 20 times per day on the eve of a potential snowstorm to follow the latest computer models.

It's not strange to love snowstorms; It's strange to be a Cardinals fan. Go Reds!

Dear Dr. Dickinson, You were so conscientious and careful when my son, Nicholas Spelic was in your care July 15-17. I appreciated that so much Since I do not know where or who will see this post, I would appreciate it if you could contact me at sspelic@cox.net or 402-598-9683, I began thinking about your comments and, as a long shot, would like to share some information with you. Thank you. Stephanie Spelic
