ITS cautions: Beware scam emails

If you don’t know the sender, it might be a pretender.

Although UNMC Information Technology Services uses a variety of tools to help protect your computer and the campus network from getting a computer virus — similar to a person receiving a flu shot — just one click can lead to a computer virus.

A sample email might read:

*Urgent notification from mail desk

THIS MESSAGE IS FROM THE TECHNICAL SUPPORT TEAM. If you are receiving this message it means your email is due for deactivation…..

Follow these extra steps to help stop computer viruses.

  • Do not respond to an email, or click on a link, that asks you to validate your information. UNMC ITS will not ask for IDs, passwords or other sensitive information in an email.
  • Do not click on unknown links or attachments.
  • Do not enter information in a pop-up.
  • Emails with poor spelling and grammar are clues to scams; delete them.
  • Pay attention to URL links in an email. Hover over the URL link to see where it is really taking you.
  • Do not send personal information in an email or through an unsecured website. Only enter sensitive data if you trust the website and it has a lock icon in the URL.
  • Call the ITS help desk (9-7700) right away if you suspect there is a virus on your computer.
