Tell us a bit about what you do here at UNMC.
One of the great things about my role as director of global relations for the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center is that it gets me engaged in so many fascinating projects related to joint ventures and partnerships, marketing and communications, strategy and planning, development, corporate culture and other areas. I feel fortunate to work with a diverse and talented set of colleagues from across UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center.
“Working together” is one of UNMC’s brand values. Tell us of a time you witnessed an example of people working together at UNMC.
Certainly I’ve seen it in the warm and open reception so many people have extended to me in my first few months here on campus. But I also see it everywhere I look on campus — in people taking the time to get to know co-workers on a personal level, in people’s willingness to compromise for the common good, in their willingness to listen and communicate, in their respect and compassion for others. And I see it in the little things, too, like one colleague holding the door open for another.
What is your favorite winter activity?
Anything outdoors. Having recently moved to Omaha from California, our two kids think snow is pretty cool, so we love playing outside with them. My wife and I love to ski together. I like to run outdoors year-round.
List three things people may not know about you.
- I love the written word. I like to read history and non-fiction books of all sorts, and some poetry. Although, I almost never read fiction — life is strange enough!
- I have been to all of Nebraska’s 93 counties — I think (stopped counting somewhere around 70).
- The only article I ever wrote in my previous career as a (uh hum, hard-nosed) journalist that went “viral” was a piece on Virgin Mary-themed urinals in China. Go figure.
