The Chinese Cultural Fair was held last Friday in the Durham Research Center Commons. Hundreds of members of the UNMC community came out to celebrate the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Horse, with tea, a selection of Chinese food, calligraphy demonstrations, performances and other activities. The event was coordinated by the Asia Pacific Rim Development Program, along with UNMC’s Chinese Scholarship Council students. It was co-sponsored by UNMC’s Asia Pacific Rim Development Program, UNMC HR-Employee Relations, Organizational Development & Diversity and by the Chinese Scholar and Student Association. “Go Big Red!” took on another meaning Thursday when Irving Zucker, Ph.D., chairman of cellular and integrative physiology, donned a red dress to celebrate his department’s fund-raising success for the American Heart Association. Last week, department staff and students accepted a challenge to raise money for National Wear Red Day, which is today: Raise $200 and Dr. Zucker would run in the Red Dress Dash, a one-half mile run in downtown Omaha last night. Raise $500 and he’ll wear a red dress to work all day. They raised $655, so Dr. Zucker proudly showed up at work in an outfit prepared by Cindy Norton, administrator. He also wore the outfit to the evening run, which, with 570 dashers, was the largest Red Dress event in the United States.
Stacie Hamel, associate director of web and interactive media for the UNMC public relations department, was elected secretary of the board of directors of Together, a local nonprofit that provides emergency resources and navigation to people in extreme poverty to create housing stability.
The Department of Anesthesiology will be hosting visiting professor Dean Connors, M.D., Ph.D., from Ohio State University, at 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 19. His presentation will take place in room 1005 of the Sorrell Center; the topic will be “Resident education and evaluation: Where we were, where we are going.” Dr. Connors is an associate professor of anesthesiology at OSU and is also a board-certified medical examiner.

Todd Wyatt, Ph.D., professor, pulmonary, critical care, sleep and allergy division, recently received the 2013 President’s Award from the Florida Education Fund in Tampa, Fla. The award was for his service to the McKnight Fellows Program for underrepresented minority students training in science.
Jill Poole, M.D., associate professor, pulmonary, critical care, sleep and allergy division, was chosen to deliver the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology’s (AAAAI) John E. Salvaggio Memorial Lectureship. Dr. Poole will present at a plenary session March 14 at the annual AAAAI meeting in San Diego. She will be recognized for her outstanding service to the specialty and science of allergy and immunology.
