AnneMarie DeVoll-Zabrocki

AnneMarie DeVoll-Zabrocki, a pediatric nurse practitioner for the solid organ transplant team at UNMC, is the 2014 recipient of the Advanced Transplant Provider Award from the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. DeVoll-Zabrocki, who has been at UNMC since 2004, received the award at the 2014 ASTS Winter Symposium, held this week in Miami Beach, Fla. The award is given annually to advanced transplant professionals (ATP) who have demonstrated exemplary service to transplant patients and fellow transplant health professionals. The award recognizes the time and effort dedicated to advancing clinical practice through translation of scientific information, development of standards and clinical mentoring. The American Society of Transplant Surgeons is composed of about 2,000 transplant surgeons, physicians, scientists, advanced transplant providers and allied health professionals dedicated to excellence in transplantation surgery through education and research with respect to all aspects of organ donation and transplantation.

Eric Nagengast

Eric Nagengast, a UNMC medical student, is working in the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change (PGSSC) at Harvard Medical School. The program works to provide surgical care for low income countries. Nagengast is taking the year off between his third and fourth year of medical school. He is part of a group that has been asked by The Lancet, a major medical journal, to lead a commission on global surgery. The commission will hold meetings in Boston, Sierra Leone (a country in West Africa), and an undetermined location. These meetings will be attended by global health and surgical experts from all over the world. Eventually, the commission will produce a report that will be published in the Lancet. John Schleicher

John Schleicher, head of special collections in the McGoogan Library of Medicine, has been elected to the board of directors for Humanities Nebraska. Established as a state-based affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1973, Humanities Nebraska inspires and enriches personal and public life by offering opportunities to thoughtfully engage with history and culture. Over the past four decades, its programming has evolved and expanded to include a number of programs held across the state. In his role at UNMC, Schleicher is in charge of rare books, archival material, artifacts, and artwork, related to the history of medicine and the other health professions. He is also an adjunct lecturer in history at UNO.
