UNMC names Dr. Caverzagie associate dean for educational strategy

Kelly Caverzagie, M.D., associate vice chair for quality and physician competence in the University of Nebraska Medical Center Department of Internal Medicine, has been appointed associate dean for educational strategy for the College of Medicine.

The newly created position was announced today by Gerald Moore, M.D., senior associate dean for academic affairs.

“Dr. Caverzagie has been very active nationally in medical education,” Dr. Moore said. “He will lead UNMC’s efforts in implementing various new strategies to allow us to better educate the physicians of tomorrow and make them successful.”

As associate dean, Dr. Caverzagie will be responsible for:

  • identifying, implementing and assessing educational strategies at the undergraduate, graduate and post graduate level;
  • monitoring local and national trends in medical education and making recommendations for the integration of appropriate training and assessment programs for the College of Medicine.

He currently serves as education liaison for the leadership group for OneTeam, the new clinical enterprise initiative involving the College of Medicine, The Nebraska Medical Center, UNMC Physicians and the Bellevue Medical Center.

“In this capacity, he ensures the group doesn’t lose sight of the important role of education,” Dr. Moore said.

Dr. Caverzagie, who works clinically as a hospitalist, obtained his medical degree from UNMC in 2001 and served as chief resident during his internal medicine residency at UNMC. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Following his residency, Dr. Caverzagie completed a two-year Clinician-Educator Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania focusing on self-assessment among trainees.

“I’m excited to be given this new opportunity,” he said. “It’s important that the College of Medicine stay current with national trends, anticipate appropriate changes in the educational landscape and identify opportunities for innovation and growth.”

An expert in the assessment and evaluation of learners, Dr. Caverzagie has been a national leader in internal medicine’s implementation of the Next Accreditation System and also collaborates with leaders worldwide in topics regarding medical education redesign.

As a teacher, Dr. Caverzagie enjoys assisting students and residents in complex decision-making and communication skills, as well as teaching about topics such as health care policy, education reform and the hidden curriculum.

He has served in a variety of roles for the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM), the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) and the American Medical Association (AMA).
