The Nebraska Medical Center is using a new technology to communicate instantly with deaf patients.
In the past, communication with a deaf patient was challenging. Staff and patients had to wait for an interpreter to arrive on-site for ER visits, inpatient stays, same day consults or other tasks. With the new technology, Cyracom, interpretive services can be accessed instantly via a web cam.
All inpatient units and clinics are encouraged to designate a computer/laptop with a web cam to provide instant access to the deaf consumer without delays in services when an on-site interpreter is not available. Currently, there is no charge to the unit for using this service.
