UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, were honored Nov. 15 by the North Omaha Community Care Council (NOCCC) with the Heritage Award.
“For the leadership and outstanding support the two organizations have shown the council over the years we honor them today,” said Wayne Houston, community outreach specialist with UNMC and member of the NOCCC board.
The award was presented at the inaugural Impact Luncheon held at the Metropolitan Community College’s Culinary Arts Ballroom, to raise awareness about the NOCCC and celebrate the council’s 17-year history.
UNMC started the council as an advisory panel on community engagement and as a liaison with the north Omaha community, Houston said.
Today the council is a non-profit that includes members from 40 community organizations, including the United Way of the Midlands, Girls Inc., Omaha Public Schools, Omaha Police Department, UNMC, Creighton/Alegent Health and the Omaha Housing Authority.
The goal of the council is to preserve the health and well-being of those in the north Omaha community.
“I’m proud of what UNMC has done to assist the north Omaha community and we continue to have a vibrant relationship with it through the North Omaha Community Care Council,” said Ward Chambers, M.D., executive director of international health and medical education at UNMC.
