Jim Stimpson, Ph.D.

Jim Stimpson, Ph.D., director and associate professor, Center for Health Policy, College of Public Health, was named one of the Midlands Business Journal’s 2013 40 Under 40 Award recipients. Dr. Stimpson was honored for his tireless efforts to communicate research and objective analysis of health policies to drive policy decisions that benefit the state’s residents. Since the Center opened in 2012, he has published more than 50 peer-reviewed research journal articles, policy briefs and reports; secured at least 15 grants; and generated 450 media placements, valued at $1 million. The award recognizes top metropolitan area professional men and women under the age of 40.

A memorial service will be held for Cal Davis, M.D., at 11 a.m. Nov. 30 at St. Cecilia’s Cathedral, 701 N. 40th St., Omaha. Dr. Davis, an internal medicine faculty member at UNMC from 1961 to 1997, died Oct. 29 in Estes Park, Colo., following a prolonged illness related to heart failure. He was 82.

Athena Ramos

Athena Ramos of the Center for Reducing Health Disparities in the College of Public Health will take part in a memorial for President John F. Kennedy at noon today at Dundee Presbyterian Church, 5312 Underwood Ave., in Omaha. Ramos will be one of several speakers at the program, which will include remembrances of President Kennedy’s visits to Nebraska, major accomplishments and impact on America and the world.

Heartland Family Service honored the family of Jim Armitage, M.D., and his wife, Nancy, as one of its four outstanding families in Nebraska this year. The Armitages were recognized for the leadership they have provided to the Omaha community as well as for the contributions to research and education that Dr. Armitage has made to the local, national and international medical profession. A world expert in lymphoma, Dr. Armitage helped start UNMC’s bone marrow transplant program in 1983.

John Russell

The department of business and finance will host a retirement tea for John Russell on Dec. 9 that is open to the campus. Russell will be retiring from his position as assistant vice chancellor and executive director of human resources at UNMC, where he has served the past 14 years and oversees employee benefits, the Center for Healthy Living, the Child Development Center, employee relations/organizational development, the faculty/employee assistance program and staffing/compensation/records and HR information technology. His last day will be Dec. 31. The tea will be from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Sorrell Center’s Truhlsen Events Center, Room 1001A. Everyone is invited to stop by and wish John well.

The UNMC College of Nursing Doctor of Nursing Practice degree recently received a full five-year accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education board of commissioners. The board determined that the program met all four accreditation standards. The degree prepares nurses in advanced clinical expertise to diagnose, treat, prescribe medication and focus on health promotion. It also trains them in methods and strategies to improve patient care quality and translate research findings to benefit patients. “I am so pleased that the quality for which the UNMC College of Nursing and UNMC more broadly are known for, was evident,” said Juliann Sebastian, Ph.D., dean of the UNMC College of Nursing. “I’m delighted by what this means for our students and graduates.” Dr. Sebastian said the accreditation shows the program meets standards of quality, including mission and governance, institutional commitment and resources, curriculum and teaching-learning practices and program effectiveness, student performance and faculty accomplishments. “Accreditation status not only attracts students, it’s often required to receive research grants or federal funding,” she said.

At the State Capital in Lincoln last week, Gov. Dave Heineman signed a proclamation declaring Nov. 11 to 17, as National Nurse Practitioner Week in Nebraska. UNMC nurse practitioners who traveled down to Lincoln to witness the proclamation are pictured at right with Gov.
