The UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln recently held an ice cream social to celebrate the 13th consecutive year of 100-percent passing rates for its dental hygiene students on the National Board Dental Hygiene examinations. Joining the classes of 2014 and 15, pictured, were students from the previous 13 years, dating back to 2000. John Reinhardt, D.D.S., dean of the college, said the impressive streak is a credit to both the program’s faculty and its students. October also is the 100th anniversary of dental hygiene as a profession in the United States.

Joyce Black, Ph.D., associate professor in the College of Nursing, received the
American Society of Plastic Surgical Nurses’ Founders Award. Dr. Black served as the editor for the ASPSN’s journal for more than 20 years and was instrumental in establishing and supporting high standards for plastic surgery nursing practice. To read the ASPSN’s tribute to Dr. Black, click

Tom Gensichen, a member of the McGoogan Library of Medicine faculty, was awarded the Silver Beaver Award by the National Council, Boy Scouts of America. The award was given through the Mid-America Council and honors Gensichen for noteworthy service of exceptional character to youth. It is the highest award a Boy Scout council can bestow upon a volunteer scouter. Gensichen will be honored with other 2013 Silver Beaver recipients at an awards reception in January.

Two School of Allied Health Professions faculty have recently been named president-elect of their respective national organizations.
Marcia Hess Smith, program director of nuclear medicine technology education, is president-elect for the board of directors of the Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board, her profession’s national certification body.
Stephane VanderMeulen, assistant professor of physician assistant education, was elected president-elect of the Physician Assistant Education Association at PAEA’s annual meetings in Memphis, Tenn. PAEA is the only national organization representing physician assistant education in the United States. She will serve a year as president-elect, then a one-year term as president, and one as past-president.
Jim Stimpson, Ph.D., will be the keynote speaker Nov. 14 at “Reform(ation) — the Affordable Care Act,” a presentation providing a public policy perspective on how the law will impact the health care system and its potential impact on Nebraskans. Dr. Stimpson speech is sponsored by the University of Nebraska at Omaha College of Business Administration.
