Ward Chambers, M.D., executive director of international health and medical education at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, was honored Friday with a 2013 Faculty-Alumni Award from The Mizzou Alumni Association, the alumni association undergraduate alma mater, the University of Missouri.
In addition to Dr. Chambers’ many professional achievements, including serving as a mentor to underprivileged teenagers, the university noted that Dr. Chambers helped initiate a program at Missouri, the Chambers Diversity Leadership Academy, to mentor engineering students. He has also funded two minority engineering scholarships at the university.
Dr. Chambers joined UNMC in1989 and has held numerous clinical, faculty and administrative roles, including executive director of community and multicultural affairs and president of University Medical Associates.
Each year, more than 500 UNMC students attend an international experience, and more than 500 foreign students attend UNMC through exchange programs directed by Dr. Chambers. He has made 19 trips to Afghanistan since 2002, working with Kabul Medical University to develop an educational partnership, provide medical care and train medical staff.
The Mizzou Alumni Association’s Faculty-Alumni Awards were started in 1968. The awards recognize the achievement of University of Missouri faculty and alumni for their accomplishments in professional life as well as services to their alma mater.
