An army of 14,000 runners and walkers marched out in droves to support the fight against breast cancer at this year’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, sponsored by the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.
The Oct. 6 event marked the 20th year Nebraskans have joined forces to raise donations for Komen. More than 75 percent of the money raised stays in the state to fund programs such as free breast exams and mammograms, financial assistance programs, and educational outreach programs.
With over 30 representatives from The Nebraska Medical Center, UNMC and UNMCP, the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center team contributed over $10,000.
“The race was fun and something I hope to do every year,” said team captain and UNMC Physicians’ Karli Burt. “I know many people that have been affected by cancer recently, especially breast cancer, and wanted to support them by doing this race.”
