Athena Ramos, program coordinator for the Center for Reducing Health Disparities in the College of Public Health, will be awarded the 2013 Hispanic Heritage Month Inspiration Award at the seventh Annual Hispanic Heritage Month State Commemoration. The commemoration will be held at the State Capitol Rotunda today, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. The event is free to the public.
“This is a great recognition of Athena’s passionate service to the Hispanic communities in the state,” said Dejun Su, Ph.D., director of the Center for Reducing Health Disparities. The Inspiration Award is given to a person who has gone above and beyond promoting diversity and helping individuals within the Hispanic community.
Krupa Savalia has been selected as The International Society for Hypertension’s “New Investigator of the Month” for October 2013. Savalia, a M.D./Ph.D. student working in the laboratory of Matthew Zimmerman, Ph.D., was one of several UNMC faculty and students who won awards at the society’s annual meeting in September, taking the Best Trainee Oral Presentation Award.
The Omaha Metropolitan Medical Response System (OMMRS) will be conducting a full-scale evacuation exercise from noon to 5 p.m. on Oct. 16. In order to make this a successful hospital exercise, UNMC needs 200 volunteers to be mock patients. Download this flyer and consent form with more information. New officers were elected to the SHARING Faculty Advisory Committee. Ulrike Otten will serve as chair, Kristen Cook, Pharm.D., will serve as vice chair, Julie Oestreich, Ph.D., will serve as secretary and Paul Paulman, M.D., will serve as treasurer.
The Nebraska Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, in coordination with the Nebraska Regional Cystic Fibrosis Care Center, held the Breath of Hope event on Oct. 3 at the Stockyards Exchange Building in South Omaha. The event honors select individuals from Nebraska who’ve made a positive impact in the fight against cystic fibrosis. Among this year’s honorees was Laura Romero, a medical social worker for The Nebraska Medical Center and Nebraska’s Regional Cystic Fibrosis Care Center. Ninety-four cents of every dollar raised at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Nebraska goes directly to research towards a control or cure of cystic fibrosis. The foundation provided $200,000 in funding to UNMC in 2012.
