Sen. Bill Kintner visited UNMC’s simulation lab earlier this week
State Sen. Bill Kintner of Papillion, who represents Cass and portions of Sarpy and Otoe counties, toured UNMC Monday and met with medical center leaders.

  • Name: Bill Kintner
  • Hometown: Papillion
  • Legislative district: 2 (Cass County, portions of Sarpy and Otoe counties)

Sen. Kintner’s visit included discussions with Ken Bayles, Ph.D., associate vice chancellor for basic science research, and Steve Hinrichs, M.D., chair of pathology/microbiology, on UNMC’s research efforts, as well as a tour of the new clinical skills simulation lab led by Patti Carstens, program manager.

Sen. Kintner, a member of the state’s appropriations committee, said he was impressed by the way UNMC melded many different disciplines — medicine, nursing, public health.

He was also impressed by the level of expertise at the university.

“We’re competing nationally,” he said. “We are up there with some of the best research facilities in the world, and we’re starting to get relationships with the Department of Defense and Offutt Air Force Base for research.

“We’re making a difference in people’s lives, and that’s exciting.”

Sen Kintner said that as a member of the state’s appropriations committee, he has an interest in learning more about UNMC, but that he’s also a curious person by nature.

“As a member of the appropriations committee, it’s important for me to see exactly what impact we are having,” he said. “To come here and walk around the labs, the classrooms, the research facilities, it’s educational for me.

“I want to know as much as I can about the many different, wide-ranging areas we have to deal with — and there are an awful lot of them.”
