Sept. 16-20 is National Campus Safety Awareness Week, and UNMC is offering a variety of events to provide information on campus safety.
“The safety of our students, faculty and staff is our primary concern,” said John Hauser, safety manager for UNMC.
The Student Senate, Student Services, EMPOWER, Human Resources, Security and Safety combined to design several events that provide information and raise awareness about safety issues on campus, he said.
“Our campus has many diverse resources already available to students, faculty, and staff. We just aren’t all aware of them. Our goal for this event is to help raise awareness and show everyone what we have to offer when it comes to keeping our campus as safe as possible,” said Caroline Jamison, Student Senate vice president.

Noon to 1 p.m., Sept. 16: Self-defense demonstration by Mike Kassebaum, a Krav Maga instructor, on the green space east of the ice rink, outside the Sorrell Center. Ice cream sandwiches will be given out while supplies last. The event will be held in the Student Life Center gym in the event of inclement weather.
11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Sept. 17: Emergency notification handouts and brochures available at tables at the Sorrell and Durham Research Center commons areas. Students and staff who sign up for UNMC Alerts emergency notification system will get a free cookie while supplies last. Cell phones are needed to sign up on site, so to save time you can sign up in advance. Those who signed up for UNMC Alerts in the last 12 months can get a cookie after registration is verified.
11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sept. 18: Handouts and brochures on harassment (Title IX) , including information on resources, confidentiality, victims’ rights and other topics, will be distributed at tables at the Sorrell and Durham Research Center commons areas.
Noon to 1 p.m., Sept. 19: Sgt. Robert Wondra of the Omaha Police Department will present an “active shooter” scenario in the Durham Research Center Auditorium, Room 1002. Lunch will be provided to the first 100 attendees in Omaha.
Noon to 12:50 p.m., Sept. 20: Celeste Reker, president of the EMPOWER Group, will speak on domestic violence from a health provider perspective, followed by an interactive discussion facilitated by Leslie Scofield, director of first responder education. The presentation will be held in Room 2018 of the Sorrell Center. Attendees may bring their own lunch.
We should also think about our basic saftey rules! Use crosswalks, look both ways, obey speed limits and street signs. Caution at all times. This is the number one complaint at UNMC Saftey Committee Meetings. Pedestrians do no heed the rules and neither does traffic. This can only be fixed by thinking before acting!
