Construction Update – Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center

Swanson Hall demolition

Swanson Hall demolition nears completion, design development continues

The interior demolition of Swanson Hall is now complete and exterior demolition is underway. With an estimated 12,000 tons of material, it will take more than 1,100 truckloads to haul the debris away.

During this phase, excavators carefully separate materials such as concrete and steel for recycling. The demolition processes is expected to last until the end of September and once complete, the team will begin excavation for the basement of the new Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.

HDR, Inc. has prepared more than 1,000 pages of drawings and four volumes of preliminary specifications in preparation for owner review and cost estimates by Kiewit Building Group.

Once the design development phase and budget are approved, the project will move into the construction document phase, which involves the production of documents necessary for the construction of the project.

The project represents one of the largest construction jobs ever in Nebraska. The $323 million project includes a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic, a 98-lab research tower and a hospital tower with 108 beds dedicated to oncology patients.

Expected occupancy for the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center is 2017.

To accommodate the expanding construction site, a portion of parking spots in Lot 3 will be used for emergency department patient parking to replace public parking spots annexed by construction. All employees assigned to Lot 3 should continue to park in this lot as no user will be displaced as a result of this change.Construction in Lot 3 is expected to be completed by Sept. 20.

Signage notifying patients of available Lot 3 parking will be posted. Patients will be encouraged to use valet. Upon entering the garage, the first available parking will be reserved for patient self-park, followed by valet parking. Current Lot 3 users will use access cards to pass through the relocated control barrier arm to private parking.

If you are a Lot 3 user and you have misplaced your card, please call Parking Services at 559-5842 or email tspencer@unmc.edu to obtain a replacement.
