Michael Summers, M.D., will discuss the science of sleep at the next Omaha Science Cafe on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m. at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14th St.

Dr. Summers, an assistant professor in internal medicine in the division of pulmonary, critical care, sleep and allergy at UNMC’s College of Medicine, currently serves as the medical director of the Sleep Disorders Center at the Nebraska Medical Center.

He received his medical degree from UNMC and went on to complete residency training in internal medicine, as well as fellowships in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Maine Medical Center. He completed sleep medicine fellowship training at Rush University in Chicago, where he stayed on staff for three years, serving as the associate fellowship program director.

Summers’ clinical interests include disorders of hypersomnolence, sleep breathing disorders and restless leg syndrome. He has presented associated topics nationally for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Dr. Summers’ presentation replaces the previously announced Science Cafe on how the brain works, which has been canceled.

Science Cafes involve a face-to-face conversation with a scientist about current science topics. They are open to people 21 and older and take place in casual settings such as pubs and coffeehouses. Each meeting is organized around an interesting topic of conversation. A scientist gives a brief presentation followed by a question-and-answer period.

Pizza will be provided by The Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures for the first 50 people. For more information about Science Cafes, go here.
