Jim Anderson, Ph.D., associate dean for research in the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Public Health, has been named to the Advisory Committee on Human Research Protection through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The committee is directed by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
The committee's role is to advise, consult with and make recommendations to Secretary Sebelius as to the responsible conduct of research involving human subjects. Dr. Anderson has been appointed to a four-year term. The appointment was effective July 10.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to serve as a member of this committee," Dr. Anderson said.
Dr. Anderson is recognized internationally for his work in cooperative clinical cancer research. He has been at UNMC since 1989 and a member of the UNMC Institutional Review Board for more than 20 years. He has collaborated with colleagues in pediatric cancer research during a period of substantial increases in the cure rates for many childhood malignancies.
“Dr. Anderson is a leader in the field of clinical research and will bring tremendous value and credibility to the work of this committee,” said Ayman El-Mohandes, M.D., dean of the UNMC College of Public Health. “The College of Public Health is honored that one if its senior faculty is receiving such recognition.”
“During my years of service on the IRB, I have provided statistical reviews of research and collaborated on numerous clinical ethics publications,” he said.
