Twenty-two undergraduate students are spending the summer at UNMC doing research.
They are called INBRE scholars and are part of the largest grant in UNMC history.
Today we feature Mary Ellen Mooter, a junior majoring in bioinformatics at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
What should we know about you?
I love spending time with my family and friends, reading, and being outdoors.
What or who influenced your interest in science?
I think my parents have influenced me the most. They helped to give me a love of reading and discovery early on that has continued throughout my life. I also had some great science teachers both at my grade school and high school.
What is it about science that excites you?
Science is exciting to me because there are so many things we still don’t know about it, and there are so many discoveries yet to be made. These possible future breakthroughs could help answer many questions and solve some of the problems we have.
Will you pursue a career in science? If so, what do you hope to accomplish?
I do plan on pursuing a career in science. I would like to get involved in biomedical research, particularly research on cancer.
Why is it important to have programs like INBRE?
I think it is important that we have programs like INBRE because it gets more people interested and involved in science and research.
