Cattlemen against cancer The 2013 Cattlemen’s Ball took place June 7 and 8 on the Hanging H Ranch on U.S. Highway 30 east of Paxton, Neb. The event was co-hosted by the Ralph and Beverly Holzfaster family and the Neal Hansen family. The Cattlemen’s Ball is the state’s premier fundraiser for the fight against cancer, with all the funds raised staying in Nebraska. The organization is a longtime supporter of the Eppley Cancer Center. This year’s theme was “On the Trail to a Cure.” Click here for more photos of the event.

Jyothi Arikkath, Ph.D., and Anna Dunaevsky, Ph.D., of the developmental neuroscience department at the Munroe-Meyer Institute, both recently received Nebraska Experimental Program for Stimulating Competitive Research (EPSCoR) grants. The transdisciplinary seed grants help junior investigators get their start in the research world.

The UNMC Human Genetics Laboratory had an unannounced inspection by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) in June as part of CAP’s ongoing quality review program. Three doctoral level CAP inspectors followed accreditation checklists for “Team Leader,” “Laboratory General,” “Cytogenetics” and “Molecular Pathology” during the inspection of the laboratory. An independent inspector employed by CAP also did a separate inspection of the entire lab. The four inspectors identified no deficiencies, and the inspector’s summation report stated: “This laboratory has done extremely well in terms of quality work following the guidelines of CAP.” This inspection will accredit the UNMC Human Genetics Laboratory for another two years. The Human Genetics Laboratory has been continually accredited by the College of American Pathologists since 1974. The Human Genetics Laboratory is also accredited by CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments).

Shelley Smith, Ph.D.

Shelley Smith, Ph.D., director of the developmental neuroscience department at the Munroe-Meyer Institute, was named the inaugural recipient of the Bruce A. Buehler, M.D., professorship. Bob and Myrna Krohn established the
professorship through a donation to the University of Nebraska Foundation. Dr.
Buehler was the director of MMI from 1983 to 2007.

The Division of General Internal Medicine will host a farewell/retirement tea for John J. Matoole, M.D., on Tuesday, June 18 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. (presentation at 3:45 p.m.) in Private Dining Room C in University Towers. Dr. Matoole started with the University of Nebraska College of Medicine as instructor of internal medicine in October 1963. Dr. Matoole’s last day with UNMC will be on June 30; he begins an emeritus professorship on July 1.

eSHOP has added two new vendors. Vendor catalogs and pricing for Rainin and Integrated DNA Technologies (IDT) can be seen in the eprocurement site. Special pricing has been contracted university-wide with these vendors and will now be easily visible.
