Editor’s Note: Each month, InterCOM will highlight a “Student of the Month” from the College of Medicine. Students will be featured for their participation in activities outside of medical school and for making a difference in the community. The goal is to recognize students for what they are doing and to encourage other students to get involved in the community. After all, medical school should be much more than studying.
Personal:
Born: Omaha.
Education: Westside High School; Northwestern University (majored in comparative literature, minored in radio, television + film)
Activities:
- Social chair, Class of 2014;
- UNMC International Student Ambassador;
- UNMC Healer’s Art, founding member/participant;
- AMWA secretary 2012-2013, member;
- Surgery Interest Group Special Operations, 2012-2013;
- Researcher with Chad LaGrange, M.D., Ming-Fong Lin, Ph.D., and Jason Johanning, M.D.;
- My desire to be involved in student-run interest groups, particularly Healer’s Art, stems from my fine arts background as a literature major. There is a major role for the arts in medicine, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to help Ruti Margalit, M.D., introduce a nationally renowned program to UNMC.
Hobbies:
- Sunday dinners at my parents’ house;
- Cooking Italian food (for me, this means no measuring and that it is never as good as my Nana’s!);
- REO Speedwagon concerts with my siblings (3 states, about 10 shows);
- Writing;
- Post-war Japanese literature; and
- Scuba diving and hiking.
Staying Balanced:
My husband Matt and my family are so important to my balance between medicine and life outside of the hospital. We stay busy by spending time with friends, going to concerts like Tom Petty and Paul Simon, and travelling whenever possible with our schedules. Matt started coaching a little league baseball team this year and I’m an honorary coach, which has been a blast. I also love home projects and can add tiling and installing wood flooring to my resume.
