Culture Fest, UNMC’s annual celebration of diversity, was held Thursday, April 18. Exhibitors, entertainers and an array of foods marked the event, an always popular rite of spring for the UNMC community.
Jirong Bai, a graduate student in pathology and microbiology in the College of Medicine, performed on the Chinese guzheng, an instrument she’s played since she was 8 years old.

“This is a very traditional Chinese instrument that absolutely represents our culture and history,” Bai said.
Linda Cunningham, the event’s director, called the day a success.
“It was a lot more efficient this year,” she said. “We didn’t have those tremendously long lines.”

Cunningham also praised the many volunteers.
“Without them, we just would not be able to do it,” she said.
Performers at the event included the Cowboy Up! Band, the International Folk Dancers and others and Mannheim Steamroller’s Ron Cooley and Michael Walker, a vocalist who also served as an unofficial emcee.
Despite bad weather, Cunningham estimated at least 500 people came out to the event.
“It was a huge success and we had a great time,” she said.
Culture Fest’s theme this year was unity. “Individually we are strong, together we are transformational,” Cunningham said.
