April 1 – UNMC celebrated the 30th anniversary of its bone marrow/peripheral stem cell transplant program.
April 12-14 – The inaugural Nebraska Science Festival will feature science- and technology-related activities across the Omaha area, all with the goal of making science accessible, interactive, relevant and fun for kids and adults alike. Bill Nye, “The Science Guy,” will give a free presentation on April 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Joslyn Museum’s Witherspoon Hall. Other activities: include a free Student Expo on April 12 at the Durham Museum; a free Public Expo on April 13 at The Durham Museum; and “The Dancing Scientist,” Jeffrey Vinokur on April 12-13 at the Durham Museum.
April 15 – The Richard B. Davis, M.D., Ph.D., History of Medicine Lecture will be held at noon in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater. A 1964 graduate of the UNMC College of Medicine, Leo McCarthy, M.D., will provide an overview of blood transfusions throughout the ages. Dr. McCarthy is professor emeritus at the University of Indiana School of Medicine.
April 18 – The 16th anniversary celebration of SHARING Clinics will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. in the West Atrium of the Durham Outpatient Center.
April 18 – Culturefest at noon in the Truhlsen Events Center, Sorrell Center.
April 19 – The Hustle for Hunger walk/run for UNMC faculty and staff will be held at 4 p.m. at the Ruth and Bill Scott Student Plaza. The event will kick off the campus food drive for the Food Bank of the Heartland, which will run from April 22 through May 10.
April 27 – Bike for Sight will take place at 9 a.m. at Miller’s Landing on the downtown Omaha riverfront. The event raises awareness and funds to support a vision restoring cataract camp in Addis, Ethiopia. For every registered rider, UNMC’s International Division of Ophthalmology will perform one free cataract surgery on a patient living needlessly blind in Ethiopia. April 27 – The Lymphomathon will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at Mahoney State Park. The event is non-competitive 5K walk in which survivors, family, friends, community and corporate teams walk in honor and in memory of those whose lives have been touched by lymphoma. Funds raised by Lymphomathon participants will support the Lymphoma Research Foundation’s mission of eradicating lymphoma and serving those touched by this disease.
April 29 – The UNMC Board of Counselors will meet.
April 30 – The annual event to honor UNMC’s Distinguished Scientists will be held at 4 p.m. in the Durham Research Center Amphitheater.
May 4 – Commencement for the College of Medicine will be held at 10 a.m. at the Ralston Arena, 7300 Q St.
May 6 – UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., will be honored as “Man of the Year” by the Mid-America Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The event is at the Scott Conference Center.
May 7 – Groundbreaking ceremony for Cancer Center Campus at 10:30 a.m.

May 17-18 – Physicians and clinical staff are invited to attend “Creating a Culture of Wellness in Healthcare Settings,” at the Lied Lodge and Conference Center, Nebraska City. The conference will focus on physical activity, nutrition and stress management as methods of enhancing wellness. Attendees also will learn new strategies, resources and patient counseling techniques to improve wellness outcomes for patients.
