Editor's Note: Each month, InterCOM will highlight a "Student of the Month" from the College of Medicine. Students will be featured for their participation in activities outside of medical school and for making a difference in the community. The goal is to recognize students for what they are doing and to encourage other students to get involved in the community. After all, medical school should be much more than studying.
Personal: I was born in Columbia, Mo., and was raised in St. Joseph, Mo., where I spent my evenings battling my 70-year-old neighbor in Mickey Mouse Memory Game. I attended college at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where I majored in psychology and communications. After graduation, I conducted research on social anxiety disorder and panic disorder. Though I enjoyed research and the practice of psychology, I decided that medical training was my passion. I enrolled at the University of Virginia and completed the one-year post-baccalaureate pre-medical program to fulfill my prerequisites. I am now lucky to call Nebraska my home!
Activities: American Medical Association M1 class representative, Residency Symposium Registration Committee member, The American College of Physicians, Phi Rho, American Medical Women's Association, and a member of the "India: Critical Issues" class going to India this summer through the University of Nebraska Foundation.
Hobbies: Volleyball, reading, traveling, and trying out the culinary fare Omaha has to offer.
Staying balanced: I am very fortunate to be part of a class that values balance and time outside of the classroom. My classmates appreciate that as professionals we will be working together, so we need to take a collaborative approach to our education. I maintain my balance via off-campus study groups, intramural sports, and karaoke on Thursday evenings (despite my difficulties with pitch).
