Anesthesiology provides wide range of services at six facilities

Five new programs demonstrate department’s depth

Chair:  Steven J. Lisco, M.D.

Number of people in department (faculty/staff):

51 physicians + 37 CRNAs  + 40 residents + 22 others = 150 members

These individuals provide services at The Nebraska Medical Center, The Omaha Veterans Administration Hospital, Children’s Hospital & Medical Center, The Village Point Pain Management Center, The Village Point Aesthetic Surgery Center, and the Midwest Eye Surgery Center.

New faculty and employees:

  • Daniel Johnson, M.D., assistant professor, thoracic and vascular anesthesiology and critical care medicine, The Nebraska Medical Center
  • Mohanad Shukry, M.D., associate professor, chief of pediatric anesthesiology at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center
  • Corrine Behrens, CRNA, The Nebraska Medical Center
  • Sarah Lidolph, CRNA, The Nebraska Medical Center
  • Stephanie Macy, CRNA, The Nebraska Medical Center
  • Erin McDowell, CRNA, The Nebraska Medical Center
  • Walker R. Thomas, perioperative sonography technician, The Nebraska Medical Center
  • Stacey Therrien, anesthesiology research manager

New Programs:

Transplant and Cardiac Anesthesiology: Beginning this year, the department now offers 24/7 coverage by specialists with specific training and expertise in the perioperative anesthetic management of all liver transplants and cardiac surgical cases performed at The Nebraska Medical Center. James Chapin, M.D., is the director of transplant anesthesiology and Tara Brakke, M.D., is the director of cardiothoracic anesthesiology.

Perioperative Echocardiography Consult Service: The UNMC Department of Anesthesiology is the first in the Midwest to offer an Echocardiography Service utilizing both transesophageal and transthoracic techniques for perioperative evaluation and management of patients with significant cardiovascular disease undergoing both cardiac and non-cardiac surgery. Seven anesthesiologists trained in both transesophageal and transthoracic echocardiography specialize in using echo to improve surgical outcomes.  Sasha Shillcutt, M.D., is the director of perioperative echocardiography

National Echocardiography Training Course: CME courses are offered several times per year at both basic and advanced levels in perioperative and critical care echocardiography. Physicians from all over the country have attended these courses. These hands-on courses are held in the newly remodeled Perioperative Echo Suite and the Sorrell Simulation Center and use echocardiography simulation, didactics, web-based diagnostic studies, and live-model workshops.

Acute Interventional Pain Team: The Acute Interventional Pain Service was introduced this year. It is staffed by specialists in perioperative pain management and regional anesthesia. This team currently provides interventional pain management techniques including perineural catheters, perineural blocks, epidurals and truncal blocks as part of an innovative, comprehensive approach to pain management in the perioperative setting.  Jennifer Adams, M.D., is the director of the Acute Interventional Pain Team.

Simulation Demonstration:  Anesthesiology faculty presented a demonstration of the use of simulation in medical education. Residents and students participated in a simulated cardiac arrest and subsequent discussion with University President J.B. Milliken and the chancellors of UNMC, UNL, UNO and UNK. Jennifer Adams, M.D., is the director of anesthesiology simulation

Departmental Appointments:

James Sullivan, M.D., assistant professor, medical director, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit;

Terry Huang, M.D., assistant professor, director of anesthesiology informatics;

Amy Duhachek-Stapelman, M.D., assistant professor, associate director residency program;

Jennifer Adams, M.D., assistant professor, director of anesthesiology simulation;

Sasha Shillcutt, M.D., assistant professor, director of perioperative cchocardiography.
