A total of 127 senior medical students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha received their residency assignments today during a Match Day ceremony held on campus. A residency is a training program for newly graduated medical students in the medical area of their choice. Residencies range in length from three to six years.
Thirty-nine percent of UNMC students are staying in Nebraska for their training, and 61 percent of UNMC students matched in primary care, which includes family medicine, internal medicine, internal medicine/pediatrics, pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology.
Students are matched through a computer program to align their preferences for residency programs in order to fill the thousands of training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals.
According to the National Resident Matching Program, U.S. medical school seniors made up 16,390 of the 25,463 applicants who successfully matched to first-year residency positions. Almost 80 percent of applicants who matched obtained one of their top three choice programs. The number of residency positions in the United States rose by almost 2,400 to an all-time high of 29,171.
The UNMC students, slated to graduate May 4, are listed by hometown, name, specialty and residency assignment.
