Wellness Wednesday – Alternatives to hysterectomy and Decathlon activity

Fibroid tumors are benign tumors, or growths, within the muscle tissue of the uterus. Some women suffer from heavy prolonged periods while some have no symptoms at all. While hysterectomy will eliminate fibroid tumors, not all women require the removal of the uterus to ease their symptoms and suffering.

Attend the Olson Center brown bag on Tuesday, Feb. 19 to learn more about fibroids and the alternative treatments for women. The free lecture, titled “Alternatives to Hysterectomy: New Treatments for Bleeding and Fibroids” will be from noon to 1 p.m. in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater.

There is a $10 fee to obtain nursing credit. Call 402-559-6345 for more information or to pre-register.

UNMC Winter Decathlon update

Employees participate in an indoor walk around campus as part of the Decathlon activities.
Today’s Wellness Wednesday update previews the second week of the UNMC Winter Activity Decathlon, which features ice skating for $3 or less.

Next week’s group activity is ice skating at UNMC’s rink, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 12. Skating is free with the pamphlet/passport you get for registering for the decathlon, but a $3 skate rental fee applies.

The 10-week challenge is for UNMC employees, and is designed to increase activity and show us the activity options that are available on campus.

Participants can choose from easy, moderate and difficult activities, or develop their own activities, and employees who do one a week for all 10 weeks can win a cool long-sleeve T-shirt at the conclusion of the decathlon. Register online by Feb. 25 to be eligible for a shirt.

Each week will also include a group activity – like Tuesday’s skate – if you find strength in numbers. And those activities count toward the T-shirt, too.
Keep watching UNMC Today for more on the events to come.
