Editor’s Note: Each month, InterCOM will highlight a “Student of the Month” from the College of Medicine. Students will be featured for their participation in activities outside of medical school and for making a difference in the community. The goal is to recognize students for what they are doing and to encourage other students to get involved in the community. After all, medical school should be much more than studying.
Personal:
Born: Nashville, Tenn.; grew up in Omaha.
Education: Westside High School; University of Mississippi (Majored in biochemistry and classics).
Activities:
- Philanthropy chair for Class of 2014;
- UNMC delegate to the American Medical Association-Medical Student Section (AMA-MSS);
- AMA-MSS state chair for Nebraska;
- I got involved with the AMA because with all the change occurring currently in medicine I wanted to offer my two cents, and do it in a way that I thought might affect future policy. I think that as new laws are being created that are more or less creating the work environment that we are going to have to live in, we most of all should have a voice.
Hobbies:
- Basketball
- Sand volleyball
- Latin
- Civil War history
- Ole Miss football
Staying Balanced:
- I coach the Creighton University Mock Trial team. It’s a speech and debate team that judges performance mixed with evidentiary argument.
- When I find the time, I also try to volunteer at City Sprouts which is an urban garden organization at 40th and Franklin.
