UNMC Spirit Week will feature a variety of activities, including ice skating, a crazy hat contest, an interactive photo booth, a student broomball tournament, a "Pie the Professor" event for students, a scavenger hunt and a ping pong tournament.

Stanley Prusiner, M.D.,
the winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1997 for his prion research, will present a lecture, "Brain Injuries: Soldiers, Football Players, and Alzheimer's Victims" at noon in the Durham Research Center Auditorium.  Lunch will be provided to the first 200 attendees. Dr. Prusiner is director and professor of the Institute of Neurodegenerative Diseases at the University of California, San Francisco. His research helped explain the cause of "mad cow disease" and its human equivalent, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Anticipated announcement of the 2013 Science Laureate, as well as the Distinguished Scientists and New Investigators Awards.

Jan. 16
Robert Wigton, M.D.,
associate dean in the College of Medicine and professor of internal medicine, will deliver the second in a four-part series on the history of the college. He will detail the era between 1913 and 1946.  The lecture begins at noon in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater, and free pizza will be served to the first 100 in attendance. The final two lectures in the series are set for Feb. 20 (1947-1980) and March 20 (1981-present).

Jan. 25-26
The third annual UNMC Skate-a-thon for Parkinson's at the UNMC Ice Rink. Skating begins at 5 p.m. on Jan. 25 and concludes at 5 p.m. on Jan. 26. Money raised for the event goes toward Parkinson's research at UNMC. The event is open to the public.

April 12-14
The inaugural Nebraska Science Festival will feature science- and technology-related activities across the Omaha area, all with the goal of making science accessible, interactive, relevant and fun for kids and adults alike. Bill Nye, "The Science Guy," will give a free presentation on April 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Joslyn Museum's Witherspoon Hall. Other activities: include a free Student Expo on April 12 at the Durham Museum; a free Public Expo on April 13 at The Durham Museum; and "The Dancing Scientist," Jeffrey Vinokur on April 12-13 at the Durham Museum.  

May 17-18
Physicians and clinical staff are invited to attend "Creating a Culture of Wellness in Healthcare Settings," at the Lied Lodge and Conference Center, Nebraska City. The conference will focus on physical activity, nutrition and stress management as methods of enhancing wellness. Attendees also will learn new strategies, resources and patient counseling techniques to improve wellness outcomes for patients.
