The Douglas County board Tuesday voted 6-1 to approve an interlocal agreement that will provide $5 million over the next 10 years to help fund the UNMC Cancer Center Project.
The county commissioners voting in favor of the agreement were Mike Boyle, Pam Tusa, Chris Rodgers, P.J. Morgan, Marc Kraft and Mary Ann Borgeson.
“We can’t thank the county board enough for its support,” said Bob Bartee, vice chancellor for external affairs. “It speaks volumes about the importance of the Cancer Center Project and how it will be instrumental in better meeting the health care needs of Douglas County.”
The cancer center is predicted to:
- Provide nearly 4,800 jobs during construction.
- Add 1,200 jobs at the medical center – each with an average salary of approximately $70,000.
- Create an additional 3,457 ongoing jobs throughout the Omaha metro area.
- Infuse $537 million annually into the city and state economy.
Bartee said UNMC employees and students who support the Cancer Center Project and are pleased with the support of the county board should feel free to express their thanks to the county commissioners.
Employees and students who want to do so must contact county commissioners on their own time and without using university resources (computers, telephones, letterhead or university accounts).
