The University of Nebraska Medical Center and the Urban League will offer free health screenings and education during the eleventh annual Men’s Day on Saturday Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The event, which is targeted to underserved populations, will be held at the Urban League Family Resource Center, 30th and Lake Streets. Free screenings include prostate cancer, diabetes, blood pressure and HIV. Participants will also be offered free flu shots.
“Minorities, low-income, rural and underserved populations have a higher rate of complications and death from cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, stroke and HIV/AIDS,” said Ira Combs, community nurse liaison in the UNMC College of Public Health Center for Reducing Health Disparities. “We hope to reduce and eventually eliminate health disparities among disadvantaged groups through an emphasis on preventative care and partnerships within communities.”
