The University of Nebraska Medical Center will take on an international feel during August, as it will host three events designed to build on UNMC’s strong relationship with China.
On Aug. 7-9, UNMC will host the International Student Research Forum and the Joint Research Symposium. The public is invited to attend the forum and symposium. More than 60 students representing seven universities and four countries – the U.S., China, Australia and Japan — will attend the International Student Research Forum. This is the eighth year UNMC students have participated in the forum and second time UNMC has hosted the forum.
The fourth annual Joint Research Symposium is designed to foster collaboration among UNMC and Chinese investigators and will feature research topics such as inflammation and disease, cancer tumor biology, drug delivery and genetics.
From Aug. 6-17 during the U.S.-SINO Family Medicine Leadership Course, UNMC physicians will help equip Chinese physicians to bring the field of family medicine to the world’s largest nation. Physicians will share their renowned expertise in primary care and rural health care practices through lectures and clinical simulation role-playing. Chinese physicians will come from Shanghai, a city of about 23 million, and Xi'an, a city of about 8 million.
Like the U.S., health care reform is underway in China and the introduction of family medicine is a major component of system change. Like Nebraska, China has a large rural population with barriers to accessing health care.
Traditionally, hospital receptionists — not primary care professionals — triage ailing patients in Chinese medical centers. Chinese patients don't have the luxury of a family medicine doctor who can take a closer look at the ailment, administer treatment or make a more authoritative referral after a thorough examination.
“These events are critical to UNMC’s vision to become a world class Academic Health Center. They will allow us to continue to build mutually beneficial long-term relationships in the international arena,” said Harold M. Maurer, M.D., UNMC chancellor. “The cultural, educational and research experiences will advance our mission.”
