Faculty, staff and students are invited to the College of Medicine’s first “SimWars,” which will be held on Friday, June 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Sorrell Center, Room 3002.
SimWars, sponsored by the UNMC Teaching and Learning with Technology Roundtable, will pit a team of anesthesiology residents against a team of emergency medicine residents in a progressive simulation case.

“Teams aren’t being evaluated just on clinical knowledge, they will need critical thinking, teamwork, leadership and communication skills. And they’ll have to improvise,” said Patti Carstens, one of the event’s organizers. “It will highlight how the teams think.”
The audience will determine who “wins” the war. The scenarios will last from 15-20 minutes.
Afterwards, judges will provide feedback of each team then the audience will vote on who should get a trophy. Organizers want to fill the 218-seat amphitheater. You don’t have to have health care experience to vote.
“The exercise also will demonstrate that simulation can be used for more than procedural skills training,” said Paul Paulman, M.D., assistant dean for clinical skills and quality in the UNMC College of Medicine and an event organizer. “It also can demonstrate the use of simulation for large groups. Anyone watching this will gain some valuable pearls of wisdom.”
