In the 1930s, women were forbidden to show their thighs in public in Bermuda.
Female visitors and local residents, however, wanted to wear shorts and in order to do so, they simply lengthened the length of their shorts to the knee to cover their thighs.
And that was how Bermuda shorts came to be.
