Luis Marky, Ph.D.
In just one week, three members of the UNMC International Division of Ophthalmology restored the sight of 56 people living needlessly blind in west Africa. The weeklong surgical outreach trip to Kumasi, Ghana in late January was the first for the UNMC International Division. Along with the care provided, the team, led by Michael Feilmeier, M.D., medical director of the international division, also taught surgical techniques to faculty and residents at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. Dr. Feilmeier was joined by:
  • UNMC volunteer faculty member Jess Boysen, M.D.,; and
  • Third-year ophthalmology resident Christine Larsen, M.D.

Kristen Cook, Pharm.D., assistant professor of pharmacy practice, has been named a recipient of the AACP Student Community Engaged Service Award sponsored by Teva! Dr. Cook will receive the award at the AACP meeting in July 2012. Students Kyle McCartney, Mary Manning Kechely, Brandon Bohn and Becky Schainost participated in the community engaged service project.

Luis Marky, Ph.D., professor of pharmaceutical sciences, was recognized by the National Science Foundation “for exemplary service as a member of the Molecular Biochemistry Panel, Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences.” Dr. Marky served on the committee for seven years.

Fu Chen, a Ph.D. candidate in the College of Pharmacy, received the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) Innovation in Nanotechnology Award at the annual meeting in October. The award recognizes and promotes the achievement of an individual that demonstrates innovation in the area of nanotechnology as applied to Drug and Device Development.
