A University of Nebraska Medical Center student project has been named one of 15 national finalists in the White House's Campus Champions of Change Challenge. The top five vote getters in the contest's online polling will receive invitations to an event at the White House, and also will be featured on mtvU and MTV Act.
UNMC's entry is the EMPOWER project, which works to address the healthcare disparities of women affected by domestic violence while also exposing students from medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physician assistant, physical therapy and public health to its relevant issues.
Anyone is eligible to vote up to three times for the project by going to https://campuschallenge.uservoice.com/forums/148562-campus-champions-of-change-challenge. The project is an undertaking of the Inter-Professional Service Learning Academy in the College of Public Health.
"It would be tremendous national recognition for UNMC if we can finish in the top five," said Ayman El-Mohandes, M.B.B.Ch., M.D., M.P.H., dean of the College of Public Health. "We hope Nebraskans will help spread the word – it takes just a few seconds to vote for UNMC."
The UNMC project is in good company, Dr. El-Mohandes said. Other finalists include Princeton University, the University of Michigan, UCLA and the University of Minnesota.
