Construction to begin on hospital cafeterias

Renovations of both Clarkson Cafe and Nebraska Cafe will start this week and are expected to be completed by the end of summer.

“I ask for your patience during construction and to help visitors with wayfinding,” said Tom Hoffman, director of food and nutrition services.

A Subway will be featured in the renovated Clarkson Cafe. Renovations on Clarkson and the Nebraska Cafe will start this week.
Late Wednesday, temporary walls will go up in the entrances of both cafes. In Nebraska Cafe, you’ll notice more changes. Many of the bakery items will be moved into the main area and roughly 100 seats will be gone.

During this time, work will be done on the entrance and the new Brioche Doree cafe, offering French-style casual food. This is expected to be completed by mid-April.

Big work starts in July

The largest component of the Nebraska Cafe project will begin around July 5, when the main body of the cafeteria will close.

Brioche Doree will be open, serving as the one offering during the main phase of construction.

The timing of the main construction was strategically set for the summer when students are out of school. Work is set for completion in mid-September.

Coffee cart additions

During Nebraska Cafe’s main construction, the newly renovated coffee cart on the second floor of the Durham Outpatient Center will be open.

It will offer more “grab and go” and soup offerings, as well as more seating. Coffee cart renovations begin May 22.

Clarkson changes

Over in Clarkson Cafe, construction will begin this week on the new seating area and the new Subway location, also expected to be completed in mid-April.

At that point, the main body of the cafeteria and the restrooms near the entrance will close.

Subway to hold down the fort

During this time, the only venue that will be open in Clarkson Cafe will be Subway. To accommodate staff and visitors, more “grab and go” options will be offered in Storz Pavilion.

The main body of Clarkson Cafe will remain closed until mid-July, when construction is expected to be completed.

Sodexo will cover the costs of all the renovations.

Will there be other opportunities for businesses like Subway to locate inside the cafeterias? (Like a Chick-fil-A)
