What is human ice bowling?
It’s exactly what it sounds like it is. Here’s a video that shows how it works at some hockey arenas.
Our campus rink is a bit small for the slingshot, so instead, our bowling balls will be launched toward the pins by a pair of teammates.
Make your pick
You can help choose who actually will be flung down the ice during a pledge/vote in which you donate money toward the candidates you’d most like to see tossed down the ice. The top four vote getters will be rolled down the ice by two “bowlers” of their choosing.
All donations will go to the skate-a-thon, which benefits Parkinson’s research.
How to vote
To vote, contact candidates and let them know how much you’d like to donate to their campaigns. Their names below have been linked to their email addresses.
“Votes” will be counted at 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 27.
Meet the candidates
Our prospective bowling balls are:
- Rick Boldt, who in his position as UNMC’s manager of disaster planning is fully prepared to handle the destruction that will be left behind from his smashing of the pins.
- Greg Karst, Ph.D., professor of physical therapy education, who will be able to offer tips to those who may get banged up during the contest.
- Paula LeGrande, manager of environmental services, who looks to clean-up during the competition.
- Tom O’Connor, senior associate director of public relations, who says, “I’ve been honing this head for ice bowling all my life. Now, the time has come to show the world what I can do.”
- Erin Rosenbaugh, a graduate student who hopes to inspire grad students around the globe with her smashing performance.
- Marlene Schneider of the UNMC Faculty Employee Assistance Program who will use her counseling skills to console the other contestants after she beats them down in ice bowling.
- Melanie Stewart, resources manager in the Durham Research Centers and director of the UNMC LiveGreen initiative, who looks to leave her opponents green with envy after she wins.
- Myron Toews, Ph.D., professor of pharmacology and experimental neuroscience, who likely will be the only bowling ball to be flung down the ice by a former Miss Nebraska.
Field still ’rounding out’
Write-in bowling ball candidates will be accepted up until the date of the event, provided that the candidate has agreed to compete, of course.
