Education is one of the four pillars of UNMC’s mission and our students are the lifeblood of that aspect of campus life.
In UNMC Today’s Student Spotlight, we get to know some of these students, who will become tomorrow’s health care professionals.
Today we meet Nichelle Nicol, a junior dental hygiene student in the College of Dentistry.

What is your best memory from your time at UNMC?
The day that I was informed that I would be included in the hygiene program is without question my most memorable experience thus far. … This is what I want to do and this is definitely where I want to be!
Our four brand values are leadership, commitment to excellence, working together and being a trusted resource. Pick one and tell us a time you witnessed it embodied at UNMC.
There is an example that stands out to me and genuinely embodies UNMC’s Commitment to Excellence. When one begins the dental hygiene program, they soon understand the immense amount of time and energy it takes to successfully complete the course work. Recognizing that this can quickly overwhelm the student, UNMC held an academic success program to council new students on stress management, time organization and realistic expectations. This type of proactive measure taken to aid student achievement speaks clearly that UNMC is not only committed to standards of excellence, but also to each individual student’s potential to excel.
List three things people may not know about you.
- I strongly believe in living life proactively, not reactively.
- I always root for the underdog because I have been the underdog.
- I am terrified of heights, yet on several occasions I have jumped out of a plane at 12,500 feet, and I must say that it was one of the most exhilarating feelings that I have ever experienced!
