Alex Stowe was your typical teenager. He loved to watch sports, hang out with friends and attend school at Creighton Prep.
“Alex wasn’t feeling well,” his mother Lu Anne said. “He kept complaining his bones were aching and his cheeks hurt.”
After taking her son to the doctor, Lu Anne’s worst fears were confirmed.
“He came in and said ‘He has cancer.’ I said ‘Cancer? How can he have cancer?’ He said ‘He has leukemia.'”
Watch the video to learn more about Alex’s treatment by UNMC pediatric oncologist Bruce Gordon, M.D., including the “Porsche” that Dr. Gordon bought Alex for his ability to perform a special preoperative task.
Wow….that's a powerful video! Makes one feel good to be a part of this great medical center.
Bruce, aka, Dr. Gordon…. what you said was spoken like a pro… talking/communicating with the patient and family… and then living….GREAT job… keep doing great work !!!!

I was fortunate to attend the Omaha Light the Night event for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and heard Alex speak at that event. He had very warm things to say about UNMC and the oncology nursing staff in particular. Alex was my honor patient for my first TNT marathon back in 2007. I am so happy that he is doing well and is once again healthy. Good job, Dr. Gordon and staff! And thank you, God!
