Student spotlight – Ashley Bauer

Education is one of the four pillars of UNMC’s mission and our students are the lifeblood of that aspect of campus life.

In UNMC Today’s Student Spotlight, we get to know some of these students, who are training to become tomorrow’s health care professionals.

What is your best memory from your time at UNMC?

My best memory from my time at UNMC is probably anatomy lab during first year. There really isn’t a specific event that made this time special, but smelling so incredibly bad for 10 weeks made us all fast friends — probably because no one else outside our class could stand the smell!

Our four brand values are leadership, commitment to excellence, working together and being a trusted resource. Pick one and tell us a time you witnessed it embodied at UNMC.

I see leadership embodied every day at UNMC in my fellow students, the physicians who generously take time to educate and volunteer and the academic faculty who influence every student who passes through the halls. From specialty interest groups and volunteer programs to student-run clinics and organized mission trips, UNMC students, physicians and faculty make it their responsibility to improve their community and the lives of people around them.

List three things people may not know about you.

  • When I was in high school, I was on the diving team. One day at practice, I was doing a back one-and-a-half dive and hit my head on the board. My instructor had to dive in and save me because I was unconscious, but luckily, besides some scars and fractured teeth, I wasn’t injured.
  • I love animals and showed pigs and horses for 11 years in 4-H shows and at our county fair. To this day, I don’t like to eat pork. The pigs were my buddies.
  • Before medical school, I was honored to be Miss Nebraska 2007. I represented the state at the Miss America Pageant and learned that the secret to the swimsuit competition is glue, tape and high heels.
