Bill O’Neill has been named the director of UNMC Department of Public Relations.
O’Neill had served as interim PR director since July after the departure of the department’s previous director, Renee Fry, J.D.
After an extensive search process during which several outstanding candidates were interviewed, O’Neill clearly emerged as the right person to lead the PR department, said Bob Bartee, vice chancellor for external affairs.

"Bill is a practical visionary who has a firm understanding of where the department needs to go to most effectively support UNMC’s climb toward world-class status," Bartee said. "Bill has been a key player in advancing the image of UNMC during the past several years.
"He has the right combination of historical perspective and leadership skills to lead the department in effectively telling UNMC’s great story to our audiences."
Prior to his time as interim director, O’Neill was PR’s senior associate director and he oversaw the department’s marketing, social media and web efforts.
In this role, O’Neill was a leader in the ongoing campus branding initiative, which has had far-reaching effect across the entire UNMC enterprise, Bartee said.
Before his time as the advancement leader, O’Neill served in several departmental positions that allowed him to experience the full-breadth of the PR department’s functions, which range from publications and media relations to the planning and coordination of major campus events.
O’Neill worked as a reporter and editor at the Kearney Hub before he came to UNMC in 2000.
