Education is one of the four pillars of UNMC’s mission and our students are the lifeblood of that aspect of campus life.
In UNMC Today’s Student Spotlight, we get to know some of these students, who are training to become tomorrow’s health care professionals.
Today we meet Whitney Carlson, a first-year College of Dentistry student.

What is your best memory from your time at UNMC?
So far, it’s been meeting all the great people down here. I am looking forward to making many more memories in the coming four years.
Our four brand values are leadership, commitment to excellence, working together and being a trusted resource. Pick one and tell us a time you witnessed it embodied at UNMC.
My D1 class is amazing … everyone is out to help everyone else. We came into dental school together as a class and quickly learned that we will need each other not only to get through our four years of dental school but to make it a fun experience as well. I moved down here not knowing a single soul and my classmates made my transition easy. Nebraska just fits.
List three things people may not know about you.
- I grew up on a farm with the closest town having a population of 14 people. I graduated high school with 11 other classmates.
- I have a cat named “Butters” and a hermit crab named “Tweek.”
- I did my undergrad at North Dakota State University in Fargo so when I’m not cheering for the Huskers, I’m cheering for the Bison!
