North Omaha community invited to talk, share ideas to help grow healthy families

North Omaha residents are invited to hear a talk and share ideas to help grow healthy families during a presentation given by Gerda Govine, Ed.D., a national consultant on race relations and community development. The title of the talk is, “Time for Community Action Addressing Racial Disparities in Birth Outcomes!”

The talk will be held on Monday, Sept. 19, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Turning Point Campus (Building T), 3223 N. 45th St. (45th Street between Wirt and Bedford), Omaha.

Dr. Govine’s presentation is the first of four free Community Based Learning Forums organized by the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s School of Allied Health Professions to help grow healthy families in north Omaha. The remaining forums are planned for November, February and April.

The forums are one facet of a UNMC Health and Human Services-funded research/outreach project to support healthy African-American pregnancies, said Jack Turman, Ph.D., program director for physical therapy education in UNMC’s School of Allied Health Professions, who conducts research on how community-based strategies can reduce health disparities in adverse birth outcomes.

In addition to the forums, the project also provides peer pregnancy support and trains community health advocacy leaders.

Dr. Govine is the former national education director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and chief executive officer of Govine Consulting, Inc., Los Angeles, and national consultant on race relations and community development.

Food will be served.
