What is your best memory from your time at UNMC?

Just getting the job was fantastic. I had a couple of other offers at the time and I told them I was waiting to hear from the dental college. It was my lucky day when Doc Wood called and asked if I wanted to work for him. It’s been quite a ride ever since.

Our four brand values are leadership, commitment to excellence, working together and being a trusted resource. Pick one and tell us a time you witnessed it embodied at UNMC.

In February 1990, my now former husband and I were in the process of adoption. We got the call on a cold February morning that the birth mother’s labor had started. I called my boss and told him I would be taking my “maternity” leave. Later in the day, I was told to come back to work and that there would be no maternity leave for me since I was adopting.

Dr. Brian Lange was my boss and the president of the faculty senate. Before their next meeting he had shared this experience that I had with his fellow senators and they began the process that now allows UNMC employees to take extended family leave if necessary.

Although I was not able to benefit from this new policy, this circumstance started the process that put UNMC ahead of its time. I don’t know the exact date that our policy was enacted but the Federal Government did not pass the Family Medical Leave Act until 1993. I believe this demonstrates all the values of UNMC.

List three things people may not know about you.

  • I have written a few songs.
  • I’ve been in a book club for more than10 years. I’ve read every book and just recently missed my first meeting.
  • I enjoy being outside in the garden and I love to cook.

I was thrilled to read about your adoption experience & the important role it played in the extended family medical leave! I have always felt that adoptive parents need maternity & paternity leave as well. It takes more than genetics/blood to make a family, and the adoption process definitely proves that!!! There's a special bond there that deserves all the "goodies" that come with biological parenting. GOD BLESS YOUR HEART!!!!!
