Student Plaza Dedication ceremony set for Sept. 13

Trumpet tunes and the naming of the campus art feature will be highlights of the Sept. 13 Student Plaza Dedication Ceremony.

The campus community is invited to the event, which starts at 11:30 a.m. in the plaza on the north side of the Sorrell Center.

The dedication ceremony for the UNMC Student Plaza will take place Sept. 13.
The music will be provided by “Scotty and the Grateful Meds,” a band composed of Omaha philanthropist and trumpet player Bill Scott and musicians from within the UNMC community.

Scott and his wife, Ruth, gave the lead gift that led to the construction of the plaza, which was designed to enhance the UNMC student experience.

The Scotts also have made the lead gifts on several other campus structures including:

  • The Sorrell Center;
  • The Harold M. and Beverly Maurer Center for Public Health; and
  • The Center for Nursing Sciences.

They provided the gift that brought the art feature to campus and made significant contributions to the construction of the Durham Research Center towers as well.

The name of the art feature — designed by world-renowned artist James Carpenter — may have been provided by you as it was selected from submissions by members of the UNMC community.

The winning selection will be announced during the ceremony.
