School may be out for some but a large group of undergraduate students are on UNMC’s campus for advanced learning opportunities.
The annual Summer Medical and Dental Program (SMDEP) welcomed 79 new scholars to campus for six weeks of classes, shadowing experiences and preparation for medical or dental school.

This program is a key component of UNMC’s mission to build a strong, diversified applicant pool for the Colleges of Medicine and Dentistry.

SMDEP scholars will participate in community service projects to go along with course work and shadowing experiences. In addition, John Reinhardt, D.D.S., dean of UNMC’s College of Dentistry and Devin Nickol, M.D., assistant dean for interprofesssional education, are now serving as principal investigators after the untimely death of Rubens Pamies, M.D.
How can the campus community support SMDEP?
SMDEP scholars are all potential applicants to UNMC health science programs. The UNMC community has the opportunity to not only provide strong experiences for the scholars but also to leave the scholars with a favorable impression of the quality of education available at UNMC. The scholars will take back to their home campus their thoughts on UNMC, potentially influencing a much broader population of potential applicants to UNMC programs.
What else should the campus know about SMDEP?
UNMC has the reputation for delivering one of the best SMDEP programs in the country. In the past five years, the program has hosted 400 undergraduate freshman and sophomore students and 35 former SMDEP scholars have been admitted to UNMC programs. We are proud of the legacy Dr. Pamies established and look to the future to continue to build on his successes.
