Below is a list of achievements, activities and happenings involving UNMC staff, faculty and students.

Michael Sorrell, M.D., professor in the College of Medicine, recently was honored by the Department of Veterans Affairs Nebraska-Western Iowa Healthcare System with the Friends of VA Research Service Award. VA research scientists selected Dr. Sorrell for the honor for his long-term support of the VA liver research and transplant program.

Wayne Houston
Wayne Houston, community outreach specialist in the College of Public Health’s Center for Reducing Health Disparities, received The American Heart Association’s Midwest Affiliate Ambassador Award for his outstanding work in the area of community stroke awareness and education in Nebraska. The award was presented in New York at the Apollo Theatre.

Don Coulter, M.D., assistant professor of pediatrics, hematology and oncology, has received the Hobart E. Wiltse, M.D., Ph.D. Excellence in Medical Education Award. Dr. Wiltse was a legendary faculty member in the UNMC Department of Pediatrics known for his outstanding contributions to education.

During the recent School of Allied Health Professions’ Forum on Evidence-Based Medicine, 114 students and 12 faculty members presented 77 posters in three categories:

  • Clinical research;
  • Educational research; and
  • critical reviews.

SAHP students complete research or literature review projects as partial requirements for program completion and/or participation in state and national professional meetings.

    Congratulations Wayne. I had taken a class at UNO you taught in the 1990's and was so impressed I gave your name to UNMC as a perfect candidate for the outreach program they were starting. I am so glad you joined UNMC and awards like this recognize what you have achieved.
