The role of nurse midwives in healthy pregnancies is the topic of the next Science Café, at 6:30 p.m., May 5, at red9, 9th and M Streets in Lincoln.
Attendees will hear from Karen McGivney-Liechti, a certified nurse midwife with Heart and Hands Womancare at the People’s Health Center, and Barbara Sittner, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing.
Their presentation is titled “Delivering”- CenteringPregnancy® to Nebraska.” The CenteringPregnancy® model program was introduced through a grant from the March of Dimes in 2009. It is associated with a lower incidence of low birth weight babies, lower incidence of preterm births, and higher breastfeeding rates.
Science Cafe is a free educational event sponsored by UNMC and other groups to increase the population’s science literacy. Hosted by UNMC, Bio Nebraska and the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures, Science Cafes are held the first Tuesday of each month in Omaha and one Thursday every other month in Lincoln.
A more scientifically literate populace is a goal in UNMC’s strategic plan. The goal of the committee has been to introduce and get young adults interested in science by presenting it in a casual setting.
